Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas and St. Philip's, Uvalde Host Camp for Children Experiencing Grief
The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Uvalde joined forces to provide a grief education camp for children who had experienced the death of a family member or friend.
The four day camp held June 5 - 8, provided expressive arts activities including painting, singing, song writing, and a drumming circle.
On Tuesday, sports day, the facilities of St. Philip’s were occupied by the San Antonio Spurs training team along with Tre Jones who presented the bereavement center with a check for $25,000.
Thursday was spent at the Mirasol Ranch where Jeanne and Bob Dullnig hosted the campers. The Texas A&M Agri Extension officer trained the campers on how to bird watch (24 different species were seen in less than an hour) and how to identify types of snakes and fossils that were found in the river bed.
Infused in the camp were exercises on how to acknowledge and accept the death of a loved one. There were of course tears, squeals, laughter, and ultimately healing experienced by the 15 campers. They left the camp with new friends, new skills, and a love for St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Uvalde.
