Announcing New Additions to the Camps and Conferences Staff

Mustang Island Family Camp Director

The Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is pleased to announce Tammie Shelton as the new Mustang Island Family Camp Director. Tammie brings a wealth of camp experience to the conference center, most recently serving as Director of Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, Texas.

As Family Camp Director, Tammie will plan, coordinate, and implement Mustang Island Family Camp and help the conference center host year-round groups as needed. She will recruit and train the summer staff members, mentor the Sewanee Ecological Interns, coordinate with Family Camp Chaplains, and communicate with families leading up to each session. Working closely with Kevin Spaeth, Director of Mustang Island Conference Center, and other camp staff, Tammie will help carry out the conference center's mission - to provide a sacred place for guests to rest, reflect, and renew their faith, surrounded by God’s coastal creation.

Starting in February 2023, Tammie hit the ground running by attending Council 2023 as part of the Camps and Conference Department team and actively recruiting Family Camp staff members for the summer. As a long-time member of Good Shepherd Church in Corpus Christi, Tammie has many wonderful connections to Mustang Island Conference Center.

Tammie shared, "I am thrilled to join the Mustang Island Conference Center Family. I have loved Mustang Island Conference Center since attending Cursillo there in 2003 shortly after the center was built. The building, location, and especially the people are special to me. Camp is my passion and ministry, and I am excited to be back in a role of service. I look forward to serving our families at Family Camp 2023 and beyond!‍

Camp Capers Program Director

The Episcopal Diocese of West Texas is pleased to announce the hiring of Sarah Carlson as Camp Capers Program Director. Sarah joined the diocesan camp staff in February 2022, serving as Camp Capers' Leadership Development Coordinator while completing her Masters of Arts in Youth Ministry.

As Program Director, Sarah will help implement Camp Capers Summer Camp sessions and will be responsible for summer staff recruitment, training and supervision. She will coordinate with summer camp Deans, Chaplains, and Teacher teams as well as help support the Sewanee Ecological Interns. Working closely with Johnson Jeffers, the Camp Capers Director and other camp staff, she will also provide support for year-round retreat and guest groups.

Sarah shared, "I am thrilled to be working in this new position with our amazing site staff who have been so supportive. I'm especially excited to continue to develop our programs at Camp Capers that have shaped so many lives in the diocese. We can't wait to serve you this summer at Camp Capers!"
