"Tangible Resurrection: Maundy Thursday"
[April 7, 2020] This video is the third part in a Holy Week video mini-series from the Rt. Rev. David Reed, Bishop of West Texas. In "Tangible Resurrection: Keeping Holy Week in a Time of Distance," Bishop Reed reflects on the spiritual richness of walking the road to Jerusalem with Jesus during a Holy Week marked by physical distance.
Bishop Reed shares in his third video, "Maundy Thursday may be the day during Holy Week where there is the most colliding and confusing of symbols, and elements, and threads of this Gospel story. So that we're presented with a strange and off-putting foot washing, where brave parishioners come forward and take their shoes, or their boots, or their sandals off and allow someone to wash their feet. And it also takes courage to be the one who stoops down; and it's incredibly humbling.
And so we move from that to the institution of the Lord's Supper, the new commandment that Jesus gives us that we 'love one another as he loves us'. So that in the breaking of the bread and the pouring of the wine, we see this selfless act of love for our salvation occur. But Jesus links that in the Last Supper with the foot washing, 'A new commandment I give you, that you love one another,' and then he embodies what that love looks like, by stooping down to wash the stinky feet of his disciples. And then calling them, and calling us, to not be too proud to do the same.
And in this time of pandemic, where we're closed off one from another physically, these physical signs remind us that the call remains the same. Even physically distant, we're called to love one another. We're called to embody the love of Christ that is revealed so fully during this Holy Week."
